Custom Map Idea Contest

Table of Contents
Since the editor is to arrive this week, we will start our first contest. By being creative, you can ensure that you will be able to apply your ideas fast because we are handing out Starcraft 2 beta keys as prizes!
The contest runs for about one week. Try to come up with a good idea and post it to win. If you do not want to participate, you are encouraged to read and comment ideas of competitors so they can improve their ideas.

Rules Go to the top of this post

  1. Create a thread which presents the concept of a custom map for SC2 you would like to develop.
  2. Do it by creating a thread in the Project Ideas Forum. Only threads in this forum will be considered. (Of course, you can ask a moderator to move your thread if you have posted in the wrong forum)
  3. Do not copy your idea. We will check major mapping community forums for similar ideas before rating and you will be disqualified if your idea is copied from there (unless the post in the other forum was also from you).
  4. Try to describe your idea precisely but omit unnecessary details (for example, it is not important for a tower defense how much damage exactly your towers will do)
  5. Making your post good readable will do decide a huge part of your final score. So do not just write a big block of text, but structure it and provide additional images or drafts if possible. Also styling your text (emphasizing important parts with a color or the emph tag for example) might increase readability.
  6. Besides the "readability", following points will influence your rating:
    • Uniqueness of your idea (just creating DotA 2 will NOT be a match winner here...)
    • Is it cool? Might players like it? (Just thinking of a uber unique idea that is simply boring to play is also not good)
    • How good did you describe your idea? (Just giving three sentences will be worse than a two page post with describing images and drafts)

  7. Of course, since we want to encourage players from all countries to join in, the quality of your english WON't be graded (but it should be at least half understandable, we cannot grade what we can't understand)
  8. You can hand in more than one idea, but only the best will count. But please don't spam us with low quality ideas, doing one GOOD idea is better than 10 bad.
  9. The contest will run until Saturday, May 1st. 18.00 GMT. Then we will do our judgements
  10. Until then, people may give comments to your idea and you may edit your post if you think that it makes your idea better (however, copying ideas from ideas posted after yours will rather decrease your score!)
  11. Admins give a score to each submission. The placing will be according to this score. We do not release yet how exactly we will weight the points mentioned above in the score, but they will have approx. the same weight (so try to post a unique idea that players will like AND that is described good). It is also not decided yet which admins will grade your ideas, so do not try to bribe any of us ;).
  12. Besides copying ideas, any form of cheating will result in a disqualification.
  13. All people but admins can take part (yes, also moderators, if you want to)
  14. These rules may be subject to changes if we find a point that is unclear or can be exploited.
  15. You may only win one beta key at sc2mod. So you can participate in more events to increase your chance for a key, but if you win in two of them, you will only receive one key.

Prizes Go to the top of this post

This is the section you all want to read, right? We are giving away Starcraft 2 BETA KEYS for the top scoring competitors. The number of keys we grant depends on the number of competitors (but note that only competitors with an idea that meets minimal quality criteria will be counted, so it is no use to create 100 accounts and spam 2-sentence-ideas, they will not increase competitor count!)

Here is the number of keys we grant to the top scoring competitors:
  • 1-3 Competitors: 1 key
  • 4-6 Competitors: 2 keys
  • 7-9 Competitors: 3 keys
  • 10-15 Competitors: 4 keys
  • 16-25 Competitors: 5 keys
  • 25-40 Competitors: 6 keys
  • 40+ Competitors: 7+ keys

There may also be hidden special prizes some kind of ideas, so even if you think that your idea is not perfect, take part, you might get a key ;).

FAQ Go to the top of this post

Should I wait with my idea until Sunday and post it just before the deadline, so nobody can copy from me?
We will try to detect such copies and penalize those people. Doing an early post might help you because you can receive feedback.

When and how will the winners receive the keys?
We will send them out right after the final judgment is done, probably on Sunday. We will send it via email to the email address you provided when registering for sc2mod.com. (So make sure that your email address is correct).

How do you ensure that nobody just uses the name of sombody else to post an idea from another website?
If we receive an idea that was posted on another site, we will first check if the email addresses of those people match. If they don't or the other site doesn't display an email address, we will contact the author at the other site and ask him there if he has participated here. Only if he answers on that site, he will get his prize. (Disqualification otherwise, of course)

Good luck to all contestants!
I'm looking forward to the outcome and I hope that the admins will explain their judgements and what could have been done better in some brief sentences so we may learn for the future, unless that's too much work ;)

Hey,

because we had more participants than anticipated (and I want to release YouTD today) we will need a bit more time for our judgement. Earliest on monday, latest on tuesday. Thanks for your patience.
